Community Work

Our community work involves bespoke projects with community partners.  We work with participants to identify the skills and knowledge they want to gain through active and arts-based approaches.

Milk project

WOSDEC worked with local asylum seeking women and women with disabilities in Govanhill through weekly arts-based workshops held at Milk Cafe in partnership with the Milk team. The workshops used a mixture of collaborative art activities and drama activities based on the Theatre of the Oppressed methodology.

The content of the workshops were informed by what the community of women said they were looking for:

  • Building relationships, solidarity and a network of support

  • Learning about Human Rights

  • Exploring discrimination in the community, such as bus drivers and shop assistants

  • Developing strategies for self advocacy when engaging with the NHS, staff at Asylum Hotels, the Home Office, translations services, applying for jobs etc.

Project participants said they felt the workshops were informative, their confidence had increased and that they had learned helpful self-advocacy tools.

“I feel like it was so useful to think about the way human rights is part of my daily life and learn the ways in which I can incorporate advocacy into my own daily experiences.”

“I found it really helpful to think about the way other people experience things, the role-play gave me insight into other people’s experiences. I am inspired [to stand up for myself] the next time something happens to me.”

“For me it was eye opening. Next time I can read between the lines when someone is dismissing me, and I can assert myself without being rude.”

“[The WOSDEC staff member] was amazing. She was so warm and lovely.”
